2. Profiles of Occupying Force

Dida El-Sourady, 19- UNC sophomore, member of Student Action with Workers (SAW)

Dida is a pre-med, international studies and Spanish major from Chapel Hill (or Chapel Thrill). She works as a perdiem secretary in the maternity care center of the women’s hospital. She also enjoys peanut butter and temporary tattoos. She is Egyptian and the youngest of three sisters. She thinks stars add whimsy to occupation posters. She first began learning about sweatshops as a sophomore in high school and has been interested in workers’ rights ever since.

.

Sarah Hirsch, 18- part-time UNC student, SAW member

Sarah is a Carrboro girl with impeccable style and taste. She works at Elmo’s and tries to have adventures everyday. She eats a lot of french fries and likes malted milkshakes. She met garment workers organizing in Nicaragua two summers ago and has been interested in this issue ever since. If you have Bio 101 notes from DeSaix’s class, do send them to her. Sarah loves everybody!

.

Charlie Soeder, 22-UNC senior, member of SAW

Charlie studies math and chemistry at UNC and works in the Applied Math Department and as a summer camp counselor. He has been interested in worker’s rights since he started learning about labor history in high school, and wants to go to a university whose apparel is made under safer, humane, and fair conditions. He likes rocking out on his guitar (‘Andromeda’), vitamin C, and long walks on the beach.

Anthony J. Maglione, 21, UNC junior, member of Feminist Students United

Anthony is a Psychology major and an English and Social & Economic Justice double minor. He was born in Sleepy Hollow, NY—home of the Headless Horseman. As legend has it, the ghost pursued Ichabod Crane through the town’s forest. Eventually, the lanky schoolmaster left town. Anthony also left town and was raised in Lenoir, NC. Maglione is the Italian word for sweater. Some would argue that Anthony embodies the most cherished aspects of sweaters. This being so, he does not want the sweaters, sweatshirts or any other apparel of UNC to be created through sweatshop labor. In conclusion, he invites you to watch this.

.

.

Andrew Zonderman, 19, sophomore, member of Duke Students Against Sweatshops

As one can tell from the information above, Andrew is not a full-time UNC-CH student, but he is a North Carolinian and Robertson Scholar at UNC currently and would like to see his sister school and his state’s flagship university adopt the DSP. He is a History major and German and Medieval and Renaissance Studies double minor. Andrew enjoys watching and playing various sports, as well as talking about them on WXDU 88.7 FM.
